SETAC AU and ACEDD Peter Teasdale Memorial Award

Background

Professor Peter Teasdale, University of South Australia, sadly passed away on the 7th August 2020.  His contribution to environmental chemistry and water research spanned more than 25 years beginning with a Bachelor of Science with Honours degree and PhD from the University of Wollongong. He also worked at CSIRO, Lancaster University and Griffith University and was recognised as a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and awarded the 2011 Lloyd Smythe medal in Analytical Chemistry.  Peter made significant contributions to SETAC and was passionate about supporting research students and early career researchers.  This award has been established jointly by SETAC-Australasia and the Australian Council of Environmental Deans and Directors (ACEDD) in honour of Professor Peter Teasdale.

Award Value and Intended Use

The award has a value of AUD $3,500 cash which is intended to be used for project costs e.g. consumables, lab work or field work associated costs. Please note that costs associated with conferences (e.g. travel, registration, accommodation) are not covered by this award.

Eligibility and Assessment Criteria

This award is for SETAC-AU PhD students (only Full SETAC student members are eligible to apply i.e., "Free" or "Explorer" SETAC student members are ineligible) in their first or second year to act as “kick-starter” funding for a student’s project e.g. to extend the scope of the student's planned research. Preference will be given to students who do not have access to larger sums of project funds (e.g. as is often available via ARC grants).  Applicants will be assessed by a panel consisting at least 3 members of the SETAC-AU Council and representatives from ACEDD. Scoring will be based on the following criteria:

  1. Project's alignment with SETAC's Mission (captured in the "Overview of your research project") 5 marks.
  2. Project's impact and novelty (captured in the "Overview of your research project") 10 marks.
  3. The proposed budget and budget justification (captured in budget section), with specific details given on how the provision of these funds will maximise the outcomes of the research. 10 marks.
